Babies can get separated from their mums for various reasons. From dog attacks, electrocution, heat stress, car/building collisions, netting or other entrapment. Or sometimes mums are too weak to care for the baby or the baby would simply slip and fall off mum. In many cases the baby survives and this is where we come in. Our carers will hand raise the pups until they start flying (roughly 12 weeks depending on the age of the pup). They then move onto our flight aviary to socialise with other bats and dehumanise. Once they are fit and strong enough we release them back to the wild. Caring for babies is a very time consuming but highly satisfying activity. Our smallest babies could require a feed every 3 hours 24/7 in the first few weeks, which means carers get very little sleep. Your donation will help us pay for the baby formula, medicine, teats, blankies and toys for these young ones to hep them grow up big and strong.
